Services we Offer
Our mission is to advance the welfare of animals and promote positive relationships between animals and people.
Pet assisted visitation at the Barton Skilled Nursing Center takes place multiple times each week. This service helps patients feel less lonely and can provide a welcome change from routine, and promotes a more activity and responsiveness. We are delighted when Barton patients are entertained by our furry friends, and welcome the distraction from pain and infirmity. People often talk to the dogs, and share with them their thoughts and feelings and memories. Animal visits provide something to look forward to. Stroking a dog or cat can reduce a person's blood pressure. Petting encourages use of hands and arms, stretching and turning. It gives people a common interest and provides a focus for conversation. Many people in hospitals or group homes have had to give up pet ownership and they miss the casual acceptance a pet gives them. A dog pays little attention to age or physical ability, but accepts people as they are. The benefits continue even after the visit. The visit leaves behind memories not only of the visit, but of past experiences. It offers something for people to share.
A year round Pet Food Bank is maintained for people suffering from financial difficulties, or have low income. Food pick up is available on Fridays, 9:00am – 12:00pm, at 884 Emerald Bay Road, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150.
Pet assisted literacy practice is offered at the South Lake Tahoe Library. A trained canine listener, animal books and a tutor provided are free of charge. Participate every Wednesday from 4:00 - 5:00 PM. Repeat readers are eligible for prizes.
The Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) is a relief service that provides pet food, supplies, veterinary aid, and temporary sheltering for the community's pets in the event of a disaster like the Angora Fire of 2007. Updates on shelter locations will be posted on our Facebook page: www.FaceBook.com/LakeTahoeHumaneSocietySPCA. If the phones are out, and you do not have internet access, monitor emergency radio for the location of the temporary animal shelter. Emergency information kits are available for free, and pet first aid kits are available for a $20 donation at our office on 884 Emerald Bay Road, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150.
